Finding the Perfect Cocktail

We all do it, right. Wake up, drown our sorrows in some form of caffeine, and proceed to mix a heady cocktail that's sure to get us through the long day ahead. Oh, just me?

What I'm actually referring to, is the hair product cocktail we all concoct each morning to help our poor strands achieve the quintessential style. Smoothing, moisturizing, volumizing — you name it, we've mixed it.

It's a science really. But unlike tenth grade Chemistry, we can all pass this course.

The fact of the matter is, everyone's hair is different. Texture, density, length, porosity — there are so many different types of hair under the sun and a variety of factors that affect our beautiful strands.

What once worked for your hair when you were younger, might not be working for you now. Or maybe that gorgeous new haircolor and your ride or die shampoo don't see eye-to-eye. Even though you may refuse to admit it.

This is where we come in. Well us, and our secret weapon, Aveda. Shh, don't tell anyone.

What's so great about Aveda? It's so extremely customizable, that you can mix and match any and every product in order to fulfill your wildest of hair desires.

Have color-treated hair, but desperately need to fight off frizz and add some shine? Try Color Conserve Shampoo and Smooth Infusion Style-prep.

Suffering from breakage, but still want volume and lift? Mix it up with Damage Remedy Daily Hair Repair and Volumizing Tonic.

Love those natural curls, but also hate washing them? Pair Be Curly Co-wash with Shampure Dry Shampoo, and go live your life hun.

The world is your oyster. Go forth and Love Your Hair. It's non-negotiable.

BALAYAGE: The Breakdown

There's no denying the amount of confusion that revolves around the word 'Balayage'. What the heck is it? Why do I need it? Am I asking for haircolor or a meat-based pasta dish?

Even I was baffled the first time I heard the term. Let me rephrase, the first time a client tried spelling the word to me over the phone instead of just butchering it like a normal person. Sorry, not sorry.

So like any level-headed millennial, I turned to google for the answer. Luckily, you guys have me to break it down for you.

How to ask for it?

Let's start with the pronunciation; BAH-LEE-AHGE. Yeah, it's a doozy but you can thank the French for that. At least now we all sound smarter for it.

What am I asking for?

Balayage is a technique for highlighting the hair in which the dye is painted on in such a way as to create a graduated, natural-looking effect. Think subtle, face-framing or even sun-kissed highlights.

Why would I want it?

From application, to saturation and processing – this technique goes beyond the tradition foil enabling the colorist to completely customize each and every look to fit the individual client's needs.

With strategic placement of lighter and darker tones, the colorist has the ability to highlight and contour to create a natural-looking effect, that will grow out beautifully without the clear regrowth line from a traditional foil highlight.

What to expect when booking.

From previous color, to hair type and length, every client that comes through our doors is entirely different. Which is exactly why we provide our clients and stylists the opportunity to consult first and foremost. We believe having that one-on-one with our client's before the color service is even scheduled is essential when it comes to such a customizable technique as Balayage.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have some entirely-too-hard-to-pronounce pasta to order. Until next time.

7 Beach Bag Essentials

There's no denying, Summer is in full swing. Between the road trips, the beach days, + the family BBQ's you've probably added a few new items to your closet this season. If you haven't gone on an unnecessarily therapeutic shopping spree within the last month ― ahem, or week ― like me, well let's just say you have some serious self-control and you can just leave.

Oops sorry, autocorrect. I meant leave your secret tips in the comments section below, obviously.

But for those of you who can't resist a new bikini or floppy hat every time you make a target run, here's my top 7 beach bag essentials to carry you through until November. Or in other words, when summer ends down in Texas.

P.S. I've also taken the liberty of adding the links for each item at the end of the post so you can get your shopping fix right from the comfort of your couch this weekend. I felt it was my civic duty.

1. The shades. Whether you're throwing it, or simply shielding your eyes from the blinding sunlight this summer, a stylish pair of sunnies are a no-brainer.

2. The suit. With bright colors and dreamy floral patterns, you're sure to stand out among the rest in this tropical bikini.

3. The hat. Preserve that pretty face from the sun with a comfy straw hat. Bonus, it also hides that third-day hair you're sporting.

4. The bag. The most essential part of any beach day is a way-too-big tote to carry all of your necessities. Why not make it a cute one.

5. The sandals. These blush-toned gems are perfect for strutting your stuff in any summer setting. Slip-ons are chic once more! Rejoice!

6. The SPF. Protect that gorgeous skin with this certified organic 30SPF sunscreen spray from Coola. No lie, the Tropical Coconut scent is heavenly.

7. The Co-wash. Combat that summer hair with organic babassu oil in Aveda's Be Curly Co-Wash. This product isn't just for curly-haired beauties! It helps moisturize all hair types for up to three days. Which means less washing and more summer. Win!

The 4-1-1 On Purple Shampoo

Life as a blonde might be a whole lot more fun, but it can also be a bumpy ride when you get down to the root of it all. Like if you're trying to hide the well kept secret that you're truly a brunette.

Don't worry, I won't tell. I've got deep, dark hair secrets too. And there's nothing I love more than sharing some of our best tips and tricks on how to keep those beautiful tresses looking healthier and lasting longer.

If you haven't heard the buzz about purple shampoo, well then you're probably not blonde. And therefore can't sit with us. Only kidding, we don't discriminate when it comes to hair color.

But while this post may not entirely pertain to you now, you never know what kind of life changing hair decisions you could be making down the road, so you might as well listen up anyways.

Whether you're a beach-babe golden blonde, a striking shade of platinum, or even a stylist lady of a certain age who likes a hint of blue with her grey, I'm here to tell you there is a tried-and-true product for you.

Enter Blue Malva, your new bestie. This powerful natural shampoo neutralizes brassy tones in all shades and adds silvery brightness to gray hair with the help of lemon, eucalyptus, and ylang ylang. Oh and bonus, it smells like heaven! But then again, name one Aveda product that doesn't.

Happy Blonding friends!

Trying to figure out what to wear when it's ridiculously hot outside but your office is an arctic tundra.

I know I've worked in a salon way too long when I actually opt for black and white attire. But you can't deny that this printed skirt and strappy heels combo is essentially a match made in heaven and not to mention a fresh new take on a timeless classic.

Bring on the color. It is Summer after all, so why not tell your closet with this mid-length colorblock skirt and soft, button-down blouse. Maybe skip the chic cage heels if you like to feel your feet after a particularly gruesome workday.

Fashion faux pas beware! Maybe it's the minimalist in me ― or just the daredevil ― but why not skip the colors all together. An all white outfit may not always treat you right, but it will certainly help to keep you cooler when the temps start to soar.

Not the biggest fan of skirts? Friendship over. Then maybe this power jumpsuit is a little more in your wheelhouse. With this bad boy in your closet, you'll be the trendiest gal on the fifth floor.

Before you even start with that "you think it's casual Friday over here at Hammond, Hammond & Hammond?" I'd just like to say, HELLO I don't know where you work. And for all I know maybe your boss is totally cool, up-to-date with the latest trends, and is all for letting you express yourself through your unique and individual style. Then again you can't all have my boss. Okay, now that I laid that on thick enough ― because I know my boss is reading ― I'll be wearing something like this to work on Friday. K, thanks.

If nothing else fails, there's always a Happy Hour to look forward too.

Happy Summer everyone! Don't forget that SPF.
